Spring/Summer 2026 Courses

Encountering Jesus in John’s Gospel (NT5306)

Dr. Joshua Coutts
Saturdays, May 2 to June 6, 2026
Winnipeg (location TBA)

  • The Gospel of John is one of the most foundational and influential texts of the Christian faith. For John, the disclosure of God in and through his unique Son portrayed in the Gospel is the climactic event of history. He composed his Gospel to facilitate both an encounter with Jesus and the extension of his mission. This course offers a literary, historical, and theological engagement with the Gospel that approaches it both thematically and sequentially, with the pastoral aim of encountering more deeply the Jesus whom John presents.

The Beatitudes (NT5320)

Dr. Rebekah Eklund
May 25-29, 2026

  • This course explores the Matthean and Lukan Beatitudes in a variety of ways: in their relationship to one another, in their respective settings in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, in their Old Testament/Hebrew Bible backgrounds, and through an exploration of how Christians have interpreted and applied them throughout history. Through a combination of lecture and discussion, the ultimate goal is to discover how the Beatitudes might be relevant for our own time(s) and place(s) today.

The Psalms (OT5307)

Dr. Nate Wall-Bowering
May 25-29, 2026

  • An historical, literary, and theological examination of the Psalter, with attention to the marks of Hebrew poetry and genre. The Psalter’s canonical shape and role within Christian Scripture is foregrounded. Review of select psalms and their reception history will provide examples of how human words “from the depths” of Israel’s past speak as God’s Word “for a generation still to come” (Psalm 102:18).

Crisis and Trauma Counselling

Prof. Janice Priess
May 11-15, 2026

  • The assessment and treatment of clients in crisis and dealing with trauma will be studied using empirical materials and formulations drawn from several theoretical approaches. The time-limited nature of crisis intervention, related legal and ethical issues, and interfacing appropriately with other service providers will be addressed. Students will learn the fundamentals of traumatology, including the basics of victimology, traumatic stress, and neurological correlates of trauma. Special emphasis will be given to adult survivors of various types of abuse, including sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse.

Introduction to Healthcare Chaplaincy
(CH7501)

Prof. Kathleen Rempel Boschman
May 11-15, 2026

  • Health Care Chaplaincy is a field that is expanding its scope of practice and its role on the interdisciplinary health care team. When Chaplains demonstrate fundamental intervention skills and effectively facilitate a range of services or rituals for diverse populations, patients, and families, experience significant benefits. In this course, you will be introduced to the breadth of core competencies, how Chaplains collaborate with the health care team to provide whole person-centred care and the essential nature of Chaplaincy within the health care field.

(IN5201)

Prof. Erik Anderson
